MROO Student Scholarship Recipients 2021
The Municipal Retirees Organization of Ontario is pleased to announce that our annual Student Scholarship Program has distributed 73 scholarships to post-secondary students going into second-year across the province. A grand total of $99,000 was awarded in the 17th year of the scholarship program’s existence.
MROO is divided into 9 Zones across Ontario with Zone Directors responsible for each region. Scholarships were awarded in each Zone, as well as a limited number in a region that encompasses the rest of the country. Recipients were determined based on the number of applicants and specific eligibility criteria, including the students’ leadership skills, volunteer experience, and commitment to making a difference in their communities. Recipients must all have a familial relationship to a MROO Lifetime Member.
We are pleased to announce that MROO's largest scholarship of $5,000 went to Matias Totz the recipient of the 2021 Don MacLeod Leadership Award, named after the founding President of the organization.
Matias is studying at the University of Calgary and pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce. He found out about the MROO scholarship program through his grandfather, William James Evraire, who has been a MROO member for the last 23 years and resides in Deep River, Ontario with his wife Joanne. Before retiring, William James worked for the City of Etobicoke, Metro Toronto, and finally the Town of Deep River as a Municipal Recreation Director.
We asked Matias what his plans are for the remainder of his university studies and this is what he said: “I will continue serving my University of Calgary community as a student medical response volunteer, an intramural sports captain, a junior executive on the Commerce Undergraduate Society, and a marketing volunteer lead on the student rocketry team aiming to put a Cube Satellite into orbit for the first time in Calgary history.”
